Sugarloaf Mountain is a popular ski resort and outdoor recreation destination located in Carrabassett Valley, Maine, in the United States. With a summit elevation of 4,237 feet (1,291 meters), Sugarloaf is the second-highest peak in Maine, after Mount Katahdin. The mountain is part of the Longfellow Mountains subrange in the larger Appalachian Mountain Range.
Sugarloaf Ski Resort, situated on the slopes of the mountain, is one of the largest ski areas in the Eastern United States. The resort boasts more than 1,200 acres of skiable terrain, with a total of 162 trails and glades. The resort caters to skiers and snowboarders of all skill levels, offering a variety of trails ranging from beginner to expert. It also has a network of snowmaking equipment and grooming machines to ensure optimal skiing conditions throughout the winter season.
In addition to skiing and snowboarding, Sugarloaf Mountain and the surrounding area offer various outdoor recreational activities, such as snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and ice-skating during the winter months. In the warmer months, visitors can enjoy hiking, mountain biking, golfing, fishing, and other outdoor pursuits.
Sugarloaf Mountain is known for its scenic beauty and panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. On a clear day, visitors can see as far as Vermont’s Green Mountains, New Hampshire’s White Mountains, and even the peaks of Quebec, Canada.

SUGARLOAF OUTDOOR CENTER SET TO HOST ROY VARNEY MEMORIAL EASTERN CUP OPENER
CARRABASSETT VALLEY, ME (December 11, 2019)- The Sugarloaf Outdoor Center will be the hub of New England Nordic ski racing when the New England Nordic Ski Association (NENSA) hosts its Eastern Cup Opener, December 21-22, 2019.
The NENSA Eastern Cup is the premier Nordic racing circuit in New England, drawing elite skiers from the eastern United States and Canada, and is a qualifying event for the Junior National Championships. This year’s Eastern Cup Opener will be held in memory of Roy Varney, a State Champion Nordic skier from Turner, ME, who passed away in July 2019.
